Primary Source: Dokdo Academy Protestors

http://dokdonetwork.or.kr/gnuboard4/bbs/board.php?bo_table=aca_gallery&wr_id=409&nca=

This image shows a group of South Koreans protesting near the islets of Dokdo/Takeshima. The people in the image are holding up parasols with the South Korean flag on them as well as two parasols that say, “독도는우리땅,” which translates to, “Dokdo is our land.” To the right of the parasols, a banner states that the group of protestors are from Dokdo Academy, a non-profit organization that educates others about Dokdo/Takeshima.

This photograph was most likely taken to show the international community that there are young South Koreans who care about Dokdo. The point that the protestors are trying to prove is that Dokdo belongs to South Korea, not Japan. In addition to this photograph, dokdonetwork.or.kr provides many other photos of South Korean protestors near Dokdo. This photo shows that protesting and providing information to other citizens about Dokdo are important to many South Koreans.

BART Police Shooting of Oscar Grant

BART Police Shooting of Oscar Grant

This video I am presenting is from YouTube by 4MEGAtainment. The video shows three different videos from the night of the killing of Oscar Grant. The video also shows news reports and Oscars family and parents of his friends speaking on the incident followed by footage from a riot in Oakland provoke because of the killing of Grant and injustice of the verdict. It showed true emotion and passion from people who did know and people who had never met Oscar a day of their life.

Primary Source: Washington D.C. Gang Violence

Link: http://frontpagemag.com/2013/dgreenfield/how-washington-dcs-illegal-alien-friendly-policies-promote-gang-violence-and-child-rape/

This picture shows an illegal immigrant that is getting arrested for gang activity and violence in the Washington D.C. area. The purpose of this picture is to show how gang activity leads to people getting into trouble with the law because of the violent crimes that these gangs commit. The value of the picture tells me that my conflict is still an issue that the people of Washington D.C. are still dealing with constantly because gang activity exist in many neighborhoods in D.C.

The Killing Joke (Not the Graphic Novel)

The image I found was taken after the verdict of the Trayvon Martin case was announced. It was an image of George Zimmeran smiling and shaking hands. This photo was taken to show the reactions of the opposing side after such a powerful case. This is relevant to the Trayvon Martin case because there were many reactions and speculations as to why he was smiling. Was it because he was happy that he was found not guilty? Or was it because he got away with murder? So the question remains: what was the killing joke?

Gangland- “Gangster City”

http://youtu.be/PjKp4VWy1RY

This is a video from History channel show called “Gangland” it tells the inside stories of some of America’s most notorious street gangs.

Purpose: To give information about one of Chicago’s most notorious street gang the “Gangster Disciples”. To learn how they’ve shaped their times and affected the neighborhoods that they controlled.

Value: This video shows how gangs ruined Chicago. The video describes Chicago as if it was like a war zone filled with a bunch of rival gangs. Local gangs had people in fear of stepping out of their own doors.

Primary Source– Fast Food Strike for Minimum Wage

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2013/08/01/business/STRIKE/STRIKE-articleLarge-v2.jpg

This image shows a very miniscule portion of strikers, striking outside of one of the most popular fast food chains. The strikers are demanding for higher pay, at least $15/hr.

In many of the articles I have read, this picture has continued the idea that fast food workers’, in their eyes, are worth more than minimum wage. The argument is simple and apparent, the employees want more than minimum wage. The wage they’re receiving does not meet the demands of the cost of living. The employees believe that the very successful food chains have more than enough money to increase wages. And as you can see the strikers look like adults. Those adults may have families to raise or debts to pay, receiving minimum wage will not make life less stressful for them. They may even continue to struggle at $15/hr.

Primary Source Voting Rights Act

The primary source I am evaluating is a video from Youtube, made by the channel RTAmerica. The channel is a online news show but instead of a full length show they upload only one highlight of a story at a time. The purpose for RTAmerica creating the video entitled “Supreme Court Strikes Down Part of Voting Rights Act” was to inform the viewer of the Supreme court finding section 4 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 unconstitutional. The reason for RTAmerica distributing the information in the video medium is so that there subscribers can know what is going on in the government. Another purpose for the creation of the video and being uploaded to the internet could be so that people who do not want to watch the news on TV can have their news in a concentrated format. This primary source is very valuable because the information was distributed in an unbiased way. Although all of the people who they showed giving their speech were negative, but they also showed the opinion and reasoning of the Justices who voted against section 4. What I can learn from this source is that a lot of people were outraged at the decision that the Supreme Court made. And that quite a few people still see racism in today’s society, and therefore feel that section 4 is needed.

Edward Snowden Whistleblower or Traitor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaRvzQ887HM

Edward Snowden’s video in Hong Kong explaining his side of the story.

This is the video made by Edward Snowden. It was made by Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras. They made it in Hong Kong after Snowden fled the country. This artifact was made to relay Edward Snowden’s reasoning to the American people. In the video he details why he declassified the American documents. He talks about how the NSA overstepped their boundaries and wire tapped the American people. It helps to better understand this controversy. It gives Snowden’s side of the story whereas most American news outlets write him off as a traitor.

Primary Source – DOMA-

In the video Edith Windsor talks about the DOMA ruling. This artifact was created because Windsor was discussing the out come of her case verses the United States. Which has been a huge advancement in the gay rights movement the creator’s purpose for making this artifact was to deliver breaking news on how Windsor felt about the ruling of her case.

This video gives me first hand “primary source” information from the main party in my conflict who is Edith Windsor. What I’ve learned about the time, place, or circumstances in which this artifact was created is that Windsor was an older female in her 80’s, which is something that a lot of the text doesn’t say. Therefore putting a new light to understanding my conflict that an 80 something year old female brought suit to the United States because she believed that the laws in place were unconditional do to her fifth amendment rights of equal protection.
