In my paper I will discuss the conflict of the Dream Act. The DREAM Act is a piece of federal legislation which would legalize the status of several million undocumented youth. The DREAM Act stands for the Development Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act (Lopez, Janet). The Dream Act would allow the undocumented youth to graduate from high school and further their education. In order for these youth to further their education they must meet the following requirements: Entered the United States at the age of 15 or younger, Able to prove 5 years of presence in the United States prior to the bills passage;Obtain a G.E.D. or high school diploma;Under the age of 30 (some bills the age cap has been 35). The DREAM Act was passed on December 8, 2010 when it was voted into congress. The people had to vote on the Act and decided if they wanted it to be passed or not. Once the DREAM act was passed it started a brand new chapter for the illegal immigrants in the United States. The direct cause of my conflict is that too many illegal immigrants are entering the U.S. Supporting this claim I have discovered that According to (Preston, 2013) “there are about 11.7 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.” (para 1). The Dream Act will help to decrease the amount of illegal immigrants living in the U.S, and will give some freedom to these immigrants. Therefore the immigrants will finally be able to be treated as citizens and won’t have to deal with restrictions. Through out my paper I will discuss how the Dream Act started, the pros and cons of the Dream Act, and my position in the Dream Act.

Claim Immigrants are taking money and jobs away from U.S citizens.

Premise Claim 1:  According to (Confer,2013)  “Americans are unable to find gainful employment because jobs are being held by non-Americans who have illegally entered our borders unabated and are illegally employed by companies both large and small” (para.2).

Premise 2:  According to (Davidson,2013) “Illegal immigration does have some undeniably negative economic effects” (para.4)

What do you claim is the direct cause of your conflict?

Conclusion Claim: Too Many Immigrants Are Coming Into The United States Illegally.

Premise Claim: According to (Preston, 2013)  “there are about 11.7 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.” (para 1).

Premise Claim 2: According To  (Dinan, 2013) “The number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. is actually closer to 20 million,  according to former Border Control agents who issued a letter this weekend disputing the count of 11  million that the government and most top private demographers use.” (para 1).

The conflict that I will discussing in this bibliography is the Dream Act.

The first source that I used was a scholarly article by Janet Lopez. In this article Janets main focus was addressing what particularly the Dream Act was and why it was important to illegal immigrants. She goes into detail discussing the fine print of the Dream Act. She goes into why the Dream Act should be passed. Janet gave the benefits and the positive sides of the Dream Act. She discussed economic benefits, financial aid, and dropout rates. I chose this article because it gave me a strong and very factual background on my conflict. It helped me to understand exactly what the Dream Act was, giving me statistics and pros on the conflict. She gives me and broad overview on the conflict. It was very helpful that she included the benefits of the Dream Act and expressed how it would make a positive change.

The second source that I chose was and scholarly article by Kris Kobach. In this article Kris main focus was how the Dream Act violated the 1996 federal law. Kris thesis is that the Dream Act should not be enacted because it violates the federal law. He talks about how the Dream Act would undermine the law, and he also talks about lawsuits that has been filed. I chose this article because it gave me negative background about the Dream Act. It gave me a brand new perspective and new information that I did not know. This Article focus on one specific area of my conflict, which is the fact that it undermines the law. This relates deeply to my conflict because not only does it tell me about a flaw in my conflict, it also shows me a new side. It was very helpful because it was difficult finding a article that did not have anything positive to say about the Dream Act, and this one really stood out to me.

The third source that I used was and scholarly article by Michael Olivas. In this article Michaels primary focus was a court case dealing with the admission and application process of an immigrant. He talks about how the college has to continue not to be bias in their decision making process, but be more strict when it comes to the immigrants. He also focuses on the fact that immigrants should be granted loans, and tuition. His thesis is that immigrants should not be discriminated upon when it comes to acceptance, and that they should qualify for tuition. I chose this article because it told another side of the Dream Act. It talked more about the school end of the Dream Act rather than the residency giving me background and new information. It focus on and specific area of the Dream Act which is tuition. This relates to my conflict because it talks about how the Dreamers are affected when it comes to school and tuition. The article was very helpful because it gave specific details and brought up new ideas.

The fourth source that I used was and intellectual article in Boston magazine. The primary focus of this article was a real life scenario of a dreamer names Oumou Troure. In the article it talks about how Troure was and very intelligent young girl and how she was unable to get grants and loans because she was an illegal immigrant. The article targets the fact that illegal immigrants can not get grants or and funding for schools. I chose this article because it gave a real life scenario of an actual Dreamer and allowed you to get a glimpse of their perspective. This deeply relates to my topic because the main point of the Dream Act is to allow these people like Troure to get loans, and grant funding for college. It also gives me a story directly from a Dreamers mouth and not from a writer giving their opinions on the conflict. This article focus on one specific area which is the same as my previous source, tuiton and loan funding for illegal immigrants.

The last source that I used was and intellectual article in the wall street journal. The primary focus of this article is to give you and visual on how things were before the Dream Act even existed. It focuses on what steps were taken for the Dream Act to be passed and the proper protocols. It gives a brief overview on how the bill had to be passed through congress and all the different groups that had to vote on it. I chose this article because it shows what was actually being done to get this bill passed. It showed how things were before the Dream Act and all the steps leading up to it. What was helpful about this article was that it showed me how things were put into effect and what actually got the ball rolling for the Dream Act!

Article Summary: The article basically talks about how beneficial immigrants are/ can be to the U.S. It also suggests that this population growth will help build a foundation socially or be a problem economically. In the article there is a proposal that would reform cultural and national identity. The bigger message is that no matter what race a person is , if the U.S all works together more can be accomplished. Everyone should be considered an individual than to be grouped by their race.

In Relation to my topic: Some people view babies of illegal immigrants to be the future. If the U.S allows them to go to school and get full access to American benefits they will be more knowledgeable and can contribute to the country more. Some people think that they are beginning to overpopulate, that can be a problem. For example some people believe they didn’t get into a school or get a job because it was ‘given’ to a child of an illegal immigrant as if they didn’t earn the place.

The article relates to my topic of the Dream Act because the article makes valid points about who should get entry and membership in the U.S. The Dream Act targets who will get access/membership to stay in the United States and further their permanency and educations.  The Dream Act strives to figure out who will get temporary residency in the United States while also trying to make economical decisions. The article talks about how things should not be based on the race that you are and everyone should be treated. So this all ties in because the dreamers would like to get freedom and live free and be treated equally.

This photo shows the “dreamers” people who the dream act targets supporting the dream act, in their cap and gowns rallying for the act. The purpose of this photograph is to show that the immigrants really want to graduate and have and education. The photograph shows their support to one another and shows how they really want to succeed and further their education. This photograph shows positivity about the dream act, it does not show any negativity of the dream act. The value of the photograph is that it shows all the hopes, dream, and wishes in all of their eyes. Showing you that they really want to make the dream act happen, and that they will all stick together as one to make it happen. The photograph also shows that this is a very intense conflict and that it can arouse many different opinions and aspects.

The New York Times Vs Fox News

I critiqued the new york times and fox news about the Dream Act. In the new york times post it discusses the story of one person which was Angie Escobar. In the new york times it relates back to Angie’s life and reflects on how she wants better for her family. In the article Angie states “I could relate to him, to have the desire to go far in a career but not being able to even begin”. (Escobar, Angie). This shows how the new york times really wanted to link into someones life who was actually effected by the Dream Act. While in the fox news article it explains how there is some flaws in the Dream Act and how the information they are putting out there is not accurate. In the fox news article they state ” But the descriptions of the DREAM Act voiced by President Obama and his cohorts are not accurate. And the consequences are never told.” (Smith, Lamar). This quotes express how he wanted to show the outcomes of The Dream Act. While in the new york times they wanted to give a real life situation. The two articles are completely different because the new york times speaks highly and is for the Dream Act, while the fox news article was more against it and talked about its flaws. The times use an actual person for its source, while the fox news uses information from the act itself. This information is news because its discussing a matter that was very controversial and important to the people at the time.

The Dream Act

The Dream Act targets many immigrants in America. Many immigrants are not able to extend their educations after high school. The Dream Act will allow these immigrants who are deprived of their education after high school to attend college and be legalized. One of the key factors that the Dream Act states is ” one must be 15 years and under when they enter the United States in order to qualify for the Dream Act” (“Frequently asked questions”, n.d. ,para. 1). This reflects the fact that the Dream Act would change the lives of many different children and people. People like Barack Obama, and Immigrants support the Dream Act. While many people in the Southwest (anti-immigrants) are against it. There are many Dreamers in the United States nearly 1.8 million. The Dream Act also connects to the deferred action claim as well. “This initiative, announced on June 15, offers a two-year, renewable reprieve from deportation to unauthorized immigrants who are under the age of 31; entered the United States before age 16; have lived continuously in the country for at least five years; have not been convicted of a felony, a “significant” misdemeanor, or three other misdemeanors; and are currently in school, graduated from high school, earned a GED, or served in the military within this population of potential beneficiaries.” (Who and where the dreamers are, revised estimates, 16 oct 2013. , para. 4). This quote gratifies the fact that the president is trying to make it as easy for the immigrants as possible. The purpose of this goal is to make it easier for the immigrants and allow them to get the proper treatment they need. The president aims to crack down on immigration, but in a positive, yet effective way.
