The parties affected by the gender wage gap are men and women in the workplace that hold similar or identical positions, other potential parties include feminists, economic researchers and politicians. The first party (women, Feminists) would like to earn the same amount as their male counterparts; some women feel that the reason for the difference in their pay grade compared to their male colleagues is due to discrimination against them. Reports and statistics show that women on average earn about 82-84% of what their male co-workers earn in one year, which on average counts for about 1-1.3 million dollars over a lifetime. The second party (men, economic researchers, politicians) has interest in helping their female co-workers obtain the same wages they do, however some feel that the wage gap is a mere myth because women are more likely to work fewer hour and take more vacation/personal days compared to men. There have been many outraged women and feminists groups addressing politicians about what they intend to do about this issue and many politicians have ignored the questions or dodged them. At the second presidential debate a 24-year old preschool teacher stood before them and asked what they planned to do about it, only have both candidates dodge her question. The Paycheck Fairness Act was presented to the Senate but was down voted mainly by Republicans who oppose such bills because they believe it interferes with the job market.
